What It Means to Love a Heritage Language
Sunday, September 19th 7:00 p.m.
Join us for a moderated discussion with Julie Sedivy.
American society holds deeply ambivalent attitudes toward foreign languages. On one hand, other languages are recognized as valuable skills in a global economy; on the other hand, they are seen as potential threats to national identity and unity. Drawing on academic research as well as my own experiences as a heritage speaker of Czech, I outline some of the joys and challenges of maintaining a connection to an ancestral language.
Julie Sedivy is a Calgary-based writer and language scientist whose work ranges from the scientific to the literary and includes everything in between. Her widely used textbook on the rapidly growing field of psycholinguistics (Language in Mind) is in its second edition. Her most recent book is Linguaphile: A Life of Language Love, an embodiment of her relationship to language, both scientific and aesthetic.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Location: 383 Michigan Street at West 7th, Saint Paul, MN 55102
This event is offered in partnership between the Czech and Slovak Cultural Center of Minnesota, the Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic/Minneapolis, and Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota; supported by a grant from the Czech Republic. For questions please email info@cs-center.org.
