Backdrop Resoration Project

Czech and Slovak Sokol Minnesota is honored that our C.S.P.S. Hall is the home to the only known collection of large-scale, scenic fine artwork done solely by the nationally known artist, Victor Hubal, Sr. These treasures, created for the C.S.P.S. Hall, are used as scenic backdrops for social activities, concerts, plays, and hall events.

In 1917, nationally recognized artist Victor Hubal created these large-scale artworks. There are six roll drops, and framed stock of scenic flats. From regular use over time, the drops have been damaged. There is serious paint loss, surface contaminants, water damage, and frayed edges. The entire collection has deteriorated since previous restoration was done in 2012.

Dr. Wendy Rae Waszut-Barrett, PhD, is an artist and historian, specializing in preservation and restoration of historic backdrops. She has worked with this Hubal Collection for thirty years, and has proposed a plan to clean, patch, stabilize, paint, and seal the scenery.

Sokol is working on raising funds for the restoration and conservation of these historic treasures. Please consider donating to this project below to help keep the backdrops usable for generations of Sokols to come.
